Why would I want to use Google Docs?

We will be using Google Docs now for all of our word processing needs. Open Office will no longer be necessary. Take a look at this video. See if you can spot any differences between Microsoft Word and Google Docs.

Pretty neat huh? Now check out this video and see how these teachers are using Google Docs in their classroom to further student learning via collaboration.

So Google Docs offers some pretty neat tools that allows education to happen faster and easier than ever! Last video - check out how it works and how it can work for you.

I use Google Docs all the time for lots of different things. Here's some examples:

  • I did some graphic design work for a lady that I had only met in person once. I started up a Google Docs spreadsheet with the hours that I worked and what I did during those hours. I shared the Google Doc with her, but only gave her "read only" permission. That way, she can go in, see my hours and pay me according to what work I had done, but she can't go in and edit data. Before I used Google Docs, I had been sending her a spreadsheet once a week of what work I had done. She never knew how much I was working that week until I had sent her the spreadsheet.
  • I keep a "To-Do" list in a Google Doc and I shared it with my husband. I gave him permission to edit the document, so that he can always see what I'm up to that week, what I'm buying at the grocery store/meals I'm cooking that week, and important things I'm doing. He frequently adds snack food to my shopping list and items like "give the dog a bath" and "Buy batteries" to my list.
  • My father-in-law, who works for the Utah State government in information technology, is in the process of converting all of his department documents to Google Docs - it's THAT POWERFUL.
