Using Google Docs Offline

Watch this video about using Google Docs when you aren't on the internet.

Let's install Gears so that you don't have to be on the internet to access all of your documents. When you connect to the internet after you have made changes, Gears will automatically upload your changes to the server.

  1. Go to the top right of your Google Docs main page. Click on the Offline link.

  2. This window will pop up. Click on "Enable Offline Access."

  3. A window might come up asking you if you trust this site and want to allow it to install Gears on your computer. Click to allow it.

  4. Gears will want to create a shortcut on your desktop so that you can have easy access to your documents later. I create shortcuts on my desktop and on my start menu, that way I will be able to find it easily later. You can create shortcuts where ever you want - it is your computer. (A shortcut is an icon you can click on that runs a program.)

  5. You will now be brought back to the Google Docs main page. This is what your screen should look like:

  6. If you created a shortcut on your desktop, you will see this icon on your desktop.

  7. Double click your shortcut and it will open up a window that looks like this:
    https://fulton.glk12.org/pluginfile.php/1668/mod_page/content/1/Images/google docs 19.PNG
  8. If you are on the internet when you double click to run Google Docs, you will be putting documents into Google Docs like normal. If you are offline, this program will save what you add and then upload it as soon as you have an internet connection. Sweet!
