1. How to apply critical lenses (Formalist, Historical/Biographical, Reader Response) to text.
2. How to articulate how understanding changes through the application of each lens.
3. To identify, analyze, and interpret elements of fiction, especially irony, theme, symbolism, 3rd person limited vs. omniscient, and point of view.
4. To comprehend fiction using reading strategies (such as activating background and vocabulary knowledge; questioning; predicting; making connections;
interacting with other readers and writers; using awareness of graphics, text features, media techniques, and genre characteristics and figurative language)
5. To apply vocabulary strategies (such as context clues, word parts, word origins, and reference texts) when encountering unfamiliar words
